Robotic Surgery Q & A

What is robotic surgery?

When performing robotic surgery, the doctor sits at a console and uses a system that includes a camera and mechanical arms that have surgical instruments attached to them. Using robotic surgery offers a high-definition, magnified, 3-D view of the surgical site.

What are the different types of robotic surgery?

The robotic surgery procedures offered include:

Myomectomy

If you have symptomatic fibroids that cause heavy menstrual bleeding, irregular bleeding and/ or pelvic pain, a myomectomy is performed to remove your symptom-causing uterine fibroids while leaving your uterus intact.

Hysterectomy

A Hysterectomy involves surgical removal of your uterus. Your cervix, fallopian tubes and/ or ovaries may also be recommended to be removed, depending on your circumstances.

Ovarian cystectomy

It’s common to have an ovarian cyst at some point during your life. Most cysts come and go without any symptoms. If you experience severe pain or pressure caused by a cyst or if your doctor at My OB/GYN Specialists believes your cyst has either burst or twisted, then an ovarian cystectomy gets recommended to remove the cyst.

Additional reasons the doctor performs an ovarian cystectomy include suspicion of cancer, endometriosis, and concern exists that your cyst could impact your fertility.

Endometriosis

Your doctor diagnoses you with endometriosis when tissue that lines the inside of your uterus grows outside your uterus causing pain and other symptoms. When you go for an endometriosis resection, the doctor removes the implanted tissue and leaves uterus and other organs in place. Your doctor at My OB/GYN Specialists recommends endometriosis resection if you want to get pregnant in the future.

Why choose robotic surgery?

Robotic surgery allows doctors to work with enhanced precision, flexibility, and control while performing your operation. Additionally, you experience:

  • Fewer complications, including surgical site infection
  • Less pain and blood loss
  • Smaller, less noticeable scars
  • Quicker recovery

Due to many of these procedures on an outpatient basis, an extended hospital stay isn’t required.
